SeboNot to be discouraging but most people completely misjudge what early-stage investors are actually looking for. I’ve worked with dozens of founders through my PR agency over the years and the biggest misconception I see (especially from people with good ideas but no industry background) is thinking that a “fleshed out idea” is enough to get someone to cut a check. It’s not. Not even close. Angel investors don’t invest in ideas, they invest in signals. Traction, execution history, network, press, proof that you can either build something or get people to care. If you don’t have that, your entire strategy needs to be about making it look like you already belong in the room—even if you’re still on the outside looking in. So yeah, step one is refining the idea. But step two, which most people skip, is building credibility around yourself and the project. When we’ve worked with founders on this, the shift usually starts with narrative building—why you, why now, why this project, and then getting that story placed somewhere that validates it. Even a few targeted features in niche tech publications or business media can change the tone of your investor conversations overnight. You go from being some random guy with an idea to someone they “read about last week.” And when you do start pitching, don’t go in cold. That’s the fastest way to get ignored. Find someone who knows someone, build context before the pitch, and when you do reach out, make sure the story sounds like an opportunity they’ll miss out on if they don’t reply. If you're starting from ground zero, the investor world will feel pretty locked down. But if you can engineer the perception that you’re already gaining traction—either through press, partnerships, early user interest, etc.—you’ll be shocked how quickly people start replying to your emails. We’ve even seen some founders that were previously rejected from Y-Combinator get their following applications accepted following the acquisition of some mid-tier PR for startups placements. You don’t necessarily need to get featured on TechCrunch straight out of the gate but having any form of social proof to validate your idea beyond just a pitch deck or wireframe is a huge advantage. Investors aren’t just betting on your product—they’re betting on your momentum, whether that’s an established user base, pre-launch email list, strategic partnerships, or press. If you have none of the above, the chances of any semi-reputable investor cutting you a check is next to none unfortunately.
